Move Toward Healthier Fundraising

HEAR

The message for healthier school environments and youth organizations is spreading, so new fundraising ideas are needed. Modify what you have been doing or use the interesting options below to promote a healthier focus!

SEE

DO

  1. Plan school or community events: They require a little more effort, but the fun involved increases participation. Offer healthy concessions and raffle active play items like beanbags, foam balls and discs, and indoor ring toss sets.
  2. Sell healthier food choices:
    • If you have a school or community garden, set up a Mini-Farmers Market to sell your produce.
    • Contact a local grower or national company that sells premium fruits in quantities. Or team up with a local grocery store or produce farmer to prepare fruit baskets during the holidays. Take orders and receive a commission.

  3. Offer services: Extracurricular school groups and youth groups can organize car washes, holiday gift wrapping and community work days. For further ideas check out Action for Healthy Kids, Healthy Fundraising pdf.

HEAR - SEE - DO Tips for Newsletters

A handy “cut and paste” tip for your parent or staff newsletters to meet a healthy challenge! This week meet the challenge to curb your Snack Attack and make healthy snack choices.

Healthy "Grab and Go" Snacks to Take Along

Avoid high sugar, fat and salty snacks by fixing your own healthier versions.

  • Pack yourself a piece of fresh fruit, a plastic baggie of dried fruit, or a pre-package container of cut-up fruit and a spoon.

  • Slice up your favorite raw veggies, store in a container in the refrigerator, and daily package a serving in a plastic baggie to take with you.

Thought for the Day

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand." -- Woodrow Wilson

A program of the National Gardening Association is the Subaru Healthy Sprouts Award. To be eligible, a school or organization must plan to garden in 2012 with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18.
